Who am I?

Let's start with what I am not. I am not an english teacher, a professional translator, or natively bilingual. I did not even study linguistics. In fact, I studied physics.

So why would I try to address italian and english learners?

I had the luck, for several reasons, to learn English very early in my life from very good teachers. I had the opportunity to practice it in UK when my mind was fresh and young. I got a Proficiency Certificate from Cabridge University in 1988, when I was 16. I also had interests that could not be cultivated without reading a lot of arcane, technical and specialized English. I then worked in education for a short time. I like to read the original versions of English and American authors whenever possible, and I now work in a multinational where English is my main communication language. And ah, I like to translate songs (the more difficult, the better - try finding a good italian translation of "Potter's Field" by Tom Waits and report back to me on the results).

Plus, I like to write. However, I despise the vapid, logorrhoic useless rants that most blogs nowadays offer. So I wanted to write something that could be entertaining, short, snappy and useful. Something that would not take me more than 10 minutes per day to prepare, and the user more than one minute to use.

Take the background, the motivation, and the fact that I keep hearing people say "I would like to find a way to increase my everyday english vocabulary", and I suppose that the result is Volabulary.

However, since I still am not a professional, and I am also only human, please remember to bear with me and report any errors you find. Feedback is the source of all improvement.

Chi sono?

Iniziamo con che cosa non sono. Non sono un insegnante di inglese, un traduttore professionista, o bilingue. Non ho nemmeno studiato lingue. In effetti, ho studiato fisica.

Quindi perché dovrei tentare di rivolgermi a gente che impara l'italiano o l'inglese?

Ho avuto la fortuna, per numerose ragioni, di imparare l'inglese molto presto nella vita da ottimi insegnanti. Ho avuto l'opportunità di fare pratica nel Regno Unito quando la mia mente era fresca e giovane. Ho preso un Certificate of Proficiency della Cambridge University nel 1988, quando avevo 16 anni. Ho anche avuto interessi che non potevano essere coltivati se non leggendo un sacco di inglese arcano, tecnico e specializzato. Ho poi lavorato in campo educativo per un breve periodo. Mi piace leggere le versioni originali di autori inglesi o americani ogni volta che mi è possibile, ed ora lavoro in una multinazionale dove l'inglese è la mia lingua di comunicazione principale. Ah, e mi piace tradurre canzoni (più complicate sono, meglio è - provate a trovare una traduzione italiana decente di "Potter's Field" di Tom Waits e ditemi come è andata).

In più, mi piace scrivere. Però disprezzo le vacue, logorroiche, inutili farneticazioni che la maggior parte dei blog in questi tempi offre. Volevo scrivere qualcosa che fosse divertente, breve, sintentico e utile. Qualcosa che non richiedesse a me più di 10 minuti al giorno per prepararlo, e al lettore piu' di un minuto per usarlo.

Prendete il mio background, la motivazione, ed il fatto che continuo a sentire gente che dice "vorrei trovare un modo per aumentare il mio vocabolario in inglese", e immagino che il risultato sia il Volabolario.

Però, dato che continuo a non essere un professionista, e sono anche solo umano, per favore abbiate pazienza, e ricordatevi di notificarmi gli errori che trovate. Il feedback è la sorgente di ogni miglioramento.
