The voLabulary is most likely closed... I am sorry for all our loyal followers, but new work responsibilities effectively made it impossible for me to post even a single entry in one full year - I would say this defintely qualifies as a de-facto closure.

Archives will stay up for as long as they maintain themselves (some images already started disappearing, since I do not own the volabolario.it domain anymore), so feel free to peruse them as you wish!

Il voLabolario e' probabilmente chiuso... mi dispiace per tutti i nostri leali seguaci, ma nuove responsabilità lavorative mi hanno reso impossibile fare anche solo una singolo post in un intero anno - direi che questo si qualifica come una chiusura de facto.

Gli archivi rimarranno su finchè si mantengono da soli (alcune immagini hanno già iniziato a sparire, dato che non possiedo piu' il dominio volabolario.it), quindi sentitevi liberi di usarli come preferite!

There's quite a lot of people (at least 5, that is) landing on this site because they would like to know the correct italian pronunciation of the names of the two mascots of the Torino 2006 Olympics (the ball-headed red bimbo, Neve, and the blue yob whose head you can see through, Gliz). So, for everyone interested: "Neve" (Snow) in italian... just say "never" in english, possibly without any "r" sound, and making any "E" sounds a bit wider. That's pretty accurate. "Gliz", you just say it in English, most people will understand. The others don't know who he is anyway, so don't worry.

C'e' un bel po' di gente (almeno 5, insomma) che atterra su questo sito perche' vorrebbero sapere la pronuncia italiana corretta dei nomi delle due mascotte delle olimpiadi di Torino 2006 (la pupa rossa con la testa a palla, Neve, e il teppistello blu attraverso la cui testa ci si vede, Gliz). Quindi, per tutti quelli interessati... Nah. Se state leggendo questa parte l'italiano gia' lo sapete, o lo state imparando, e "Neve" e' una parola davvero facile, non vi annoio. Dato che presumibilmente presto o tardi dato che sapete l'italiano qualche straniero vi fara' questa stessa domanda, vi lancio una sfida: raccontiamo che si pronuncia "MORPI"?

Some people have privatley asked what it means that "I despise the vapid, logorrhoic useless rants that most blogs nowadays offer" (in the voLabulary "Who" section). After having read here above, do I still need to explain it?

Alcune persone mi hanno privatamente chiesto cosa significhi che io "disprezzo le vacue, logorroiche, inutili farneticazioni che la maggior parte dei blog in questi tempi offre" (nella sezione "Chi" del voLabolario). Dopo aver letto qui sopra, devo ancora spiegarlo?

Olympic mascots: Lake Placid 1980
After careful inspection, we have decided what is wrong with this blue-skinned raccoon called "Roni". The main issue (apart from his blue skin) seems to be the alien posture , as if he was half seen from the front and half from the side. This makes it vaguely similar to the aristocratic (if a bit outdated) pose of Egyptian god Horus, as seen for example on the facade of the Edfu temple. Give Horus a coupla ice skates, and there you go!
With this little gem we close the parade of the best Olympic mascots ever (the first one was chosen only in 1972, a dachsund dog named "Waldi"), and we can resume normal transmissions. Stay tuned!

Mascotte olimpiche: Lake Placid 1980
dopo attente considerazioni, abbiamo deciso cosa c'e' di strano in questo procione dalla pelle blu chiamato "Roni". Il problema principale (se si esclude la sua pelle blu) sembra essere la sua postura aliena , come se fosse visto per metà da davanti e per metà di fianco. Questa la rende vagamante simile alla postura aristocratica (sebbene un po' fuori moda) del dio egizio Horus, come si vede ad esempio sulla facciata del tempio di Edfu. Date a Horus un par di pattini da ghiaccio, e via che si va!

Con questa piccola gemma chiudiamo la parata delle migliori mascotte olimpiche di sempre (la prima fu scelta solo nel 1972, un bassotto di nome "Waldi"), e possiamo riprendere le trasmissioni normali. State sintonizzati!

Olympic Mascots: Albertville 1992
This is a great idea! Have the winter olympics represented by a starfish, the classic animal found in snowy and mountainous environments! If you prefer a more traditional interpretation , it could look like Maggie from "the Simpsons" when Marge brings her out in the cold. I seem to remember she has a nice star-shaped suit too!

Ecco una grande idea! Facciamo rappresentare le olimpiadi invernali da una stella marina, il classico animale che si trova in ambienti innevati e montagnosi! Se preferite una interpretazione più tradizionale, questo coso potrebbe somigliare a Maggie de "I Simpson" quando Marge la porta fuori al freddo. Mi pare di ricordare che anche lei ha un bel vestito a forma di stella!

Olympic Mascots: Atlanta 1996
SCREAM! That blue thing has got olympic circles for eyebrows, bulbous eyes with star-shaped pupils and a mouth on its stomach!!! Apparently, this lovable erm... monster... was named "Izzy", the name coming from "Whatizit" because no one really knew exactly what it was. We're glad we're not alone in feeling like that.

Mascotte Olimpiche: Atlanta 1996
URLO! Quella cosa blu ha dei cerchi olimpici come sopracciglia, occhi sporgenti con pupille a forma di stella e una bocca sulla pancia!!! Apparentemente, questo amabile ehm... mostro... si chiamava "Izzy", nome derivato da "Whatizit" ("cos'è") perché nessuno sapeva esattamente cosa fosse. Siamo contenti di non essere i soli a sentirci così.

Olympic Mascots: Nagano 1998
I simply have no comments about these whatever-they-are named "Sukki", "Nokki", "Lekki", and "Tsukki" (the first and third sound very, very ambiguous both in Italian and English). Probably they were running late on deciding on a mascot in 1997, and gave some crayons to the 3-year-old daughter of some committee member, who came out with these whatever-they-are. Just keep them away from me. Especially Sukki and Lekki, please, at least a couple of miles away.

Non ho semplicemente commenti su questi qualunque-cosa-siano chiamati "Sukki", "Nokki", "Lekki", and "Tsukki" (il primo e il terzo suonano molto, molto ambigui sia in italiano che in inglese). Probabilmente nel 1997 erano in ritardo nel scegliere una mascotte, hanno dato dei pastelli alla figlia di 3 anni di uno degli organizzatori, che se ne e' uscita con questi cosi, qualunque cosa siano. Tenetemeli solo lontani. Specialmente Sukki e Lekki, prego, almeno a un paio di miglia di distanza.

Olympic Mascots: Salt Lake City 2002
Straight from "Oliver Twist", here come the three worst victorian names ever conceived. "Copper" and "Coal" , judging from their happy hopping and from Copper's idiot smile, must also be good customers of "Powder", obviously a local pusher.

Three additional comments:

1. What are those thingies they have around their necks? Dogtags? Were they going to be sent to the Theater of Operations after the Olympics?
2. "Coal" is not environmentally friendly - what are we going to call an Olympic mascot when (if) Baghdad ever hosts the Olympics, "Oil"?
3. The three happy critters have got mittens, but for the rest, they are stark naked! Makes me wonder...

Diretto da "Oliver Twist", ecco i tre peggiori nomi vittoriani mai immaginati. "Copper" (Rame) e "Coal" (Carbone), a giudicare dal loro saltellare felici e dal sorriso ebete di Copper, devono anche essere buoni clienti di "Powder" (Polvere), evidentemente un pusher locale.

Tre commenti addizionali:

1. Cosa sono quegli affari che hanno attorno al collo? Targhette di identificazione? Dovevano essere mandati nel Teatro delle Operazioni dopo le Olimpiadi?
2. "Coal" non e' amico dell'ambiente - come la chiameranno la mascotte olimpica quando (se) Baghdad mai ospiterà le olimpiadi, "Petrolio"?
3. Le tre creaturine felici hanno i guantini, ma per il resto sono nude come vermi! Mi fa pensare...

Olympic Mascots: Athens 2004
The two happy pink weirdos above, for exmaple, have gracefully represented the Athens 2004 Olympics. I don't care if they are named "Ahena" and "Phebos", and that they are actually two ancient dolls. They do look like moronic walking pink pears with gout, and their hair is the color of their skin! I can only imagine the controversy these two raised after a couple of glasses of Ouzo and Retsina.

I due felici tipi strambi rosa lì sopra, per esempio, hanno graziosamente rappresentato le Olimpiadi di Atene del 2004. Non mi interessa se si chiamano "Atena" e "Febo" e se in realtà sono due antiche bambole. Sembrano decisamente pere deambulanti rosa idiote e con la gotta, e i loro capelli sono del colore della loro pelle! Posso solo immaginare la polemica che questi due hanno innescato dopo un paio di bicchieri di Ouzo e Retsina.

Turin will be Olympic host city in February, and work has been going on round here since about three years for preparing the event. Between building yards and media events, the city has been also involved in several controversies . For example, the two Olympic mascots, named Neve and Gliz (Neve is the ball-headed bimbo) have divided the populace. Some people say the two they are boring and without any appeal, others say they are cute. While I do not want to express an opinion (even if pointing out that you can see through Gliz's head can be worthwhile), I would like to remind everyone that all olympic mascots tend to be rather... um... curious. What about having a look at the weirdest ones in the last years?

Torino sarà città olimpica a Febbraio, e i lavori hanno continuato da queste parti per circa tre anni per preparare l'evento. Tra cantieri e eventi mediatici, la città stata anche parte di svariate polemiche . Ad esempio, le due mascotte olimpiche, chiamate Neve e Gliz (Neve è la pupa con la testa a palla) hanno diviso la popolazione. Alcuni dicono che i due sono noiosi e senza attrattive, altri che sono carini. Anche se non voglio esprimere un'opinione (ma far notare che si può vedere attraverso la testa di Gliz può essere utile), vorrei ricordare a tutti che tutte le mascotte olimpiche tendono ad essere... um... curiose. Che ne dite di vederne alcune tra le più strane degli ultimi anni?
