Perky - Baldanzoso



While "perky" has quite a complex meaning (briskly self-assured, cocky), it is very well exemplified by the perkiness of this online advert banner. How on earth can you be so briskly self-assured as to think that someone is actually interested in free seminars on that subject?

Sebbene "perky" abbia un significato abbastanza complesso (vivacemente sicuro di se stesso, baldanzoso), è ben esemplificato dalla baldanza di questo banner pubblicitario online. Come puoi essere così vivacemente sicuro di te stesso da pensare che qualcuno sia davvero interessato a seminari gratuiti su quell'argomento?

Complaint - Lamentela



A banner seen on a web site some years ago... If you have problems, something annoys you, politics bite, or anything else bugs you, just head over to the complaint site. Hey, look, it's free! As if you usually needed to actually pay to complain or "write a letter"

Una banner vista su un sito web alcuni anni fa... Se avete problemi, qualcosa vi dà fastidio, la politica fa schifo, o qualcosa d'altro vi urta i nervi, basta che vi dirigiate al sito delle lamentele. Hey, guarda, è gratis! Come se normalmente si dovesse anche pagare, per lamentarsi o "scrivere una lettera"

Barter - Baratto


If a big office became isolated from the rest of the world and the occupying white collar employees needed to fall back to a barter economy, I am convinced that the main trade good would quickly become the coffee filter.

Se un grande ufficio rimanesse isolato dal resto del mondo e gli impiegati occupanti dovessero regredire ad un'economia basata sul baratto, sono convinto che la principale moneta di scambio diventerebbe rapidamente la cialda del caffè.

Miser - Taccagno



How possibly a miser can you become? A 5% rebate? Five per cent?

Note: "miser" is a false friend. While having certainly to do with money, the very similar adjective "misero" in Italian simply means "poor" (both in a monetary and "metaphysical" meaning).

Quanto taccagni si puo' umanamente diventare? Uno sconto del 5%? Cinque per cento?

Nota: "miser" e' un false friend. Anche se ha sempre a che fare con i soldi, non significa infatti "misero". La parola inglese piu' simile a "misero" (sia in senso monetario che "metafisico") è probabilmente il semplice "poor".
