Toilet bowl - Water



Japan loos 3: and here comes the brain of the toilet bowl - with more processing power that Wintermute from "Neuromancer" , the japanese toilet's control panel is also an excellent example of effective communication. Pray tell, kind sir, would the symbol just below "wash" represent? Is it just me or that small logo is not only a rounded "W" letter, but also a pictorial representation of the part of my body that would be washed if I pushed that button? Better stay away from it all... Brrr!

Yes, you got it right. The bowl is also called "water" in Italian. Naturally, pronunciation is completely different from the English "water".

Cessi giapponesi 3: ed ecco il cervello del water - con piu' potenza computazionale di Invernomuto de "Il neuromante" , il pannello di controllo di un WC giapponese e' anche un eccellente esempio di comunicazione efficiente. Dica, gentile signore, cosa rappresenterebbe quel simbolo appena sotto la scritta "wash"? Sono solo io o quella non è solo una lettera "W" arrotondata, ma anche una rappresentazione pittorica della parte del mio corpo che verrebbe lavata se io premessi quel bottone? Meglio star lontani da tutto questo... Brrr!

Si, avete letto bene, la tazza si chiama anche "water" in italiano. Naturalmente, la pronuncia è del tutto diversa da "water" in inglese...

Toilet paper - Carta igienica



Japan loos, part 2: as the sign placed between the air freshener and the toilet paper clearly says, this toilet bowl is a "non-mobile phone" . I found this nice example of "engrish" , i.e. japanese-english, partularly funny because of it semiological implications. "Ceci n'est pas une pipe" , anyone?

Cessi giapponesi, parte 2: come il segnale messo tra il deodorante e la cartia igienica dice chiaramente, questa tazza e' un "telefono non mobile" . Ho trovato questo bell'esempio di "engrish" , cioe' inglese-giapponese, particolarmente divertente a causa delle sue implicazioni semiologiche. Qualcuno ricorda "Ceci n'est pas une pipe" ?

Loo - Cesso



Dangers, in Japan, seem to multiply in the bathroom. With a level of technology equivalent to a Mars Rover, the average Japanese loo is a true deathtrap according to the warnings written all over it. In fact, it is so dangerous that you should not splash water on it (which may sound a bit confusing considering that the bowl itself has got buttons to squirt water at your lower body), you should not climb on it or put heavy things on it, and you should even avoid sitting too comfortably!

Next on the voLabulary: other loos from the rising sun! Prepare for more toilet humour!

I pericoli, in Giappone, sembrano moltiplicarsi nel bagno. Con un livello tecnologico equivalente ad un Mars Rover, il cesso medio giapponese è una vera trappola mortale secondo le avvertenze di cui è cosparso. Infatti, è così pericoloso che non dovreste schizzarci sopra dell'acqua (cosa che puo' confondere un pochino, dato che la tazza stessa ha dei bottoni per sprizzare acqua sulle vostre parti basse), non dovreste salirci sopra o posarci oggetti troppo pesanti, e nemmeno sedervici troppo comodi!

Hazardous - Rischioso



I had the chance of visiting (very quickly) Japan recently, and came back with some strange impressions. For one thing, it seems that the most trivial activities actually become hazardous, over there. Really, I could not understand what the danger in pushing a perfectly normal airport trolley around ever could be, but then again, hey, I'm "using it at my own risk", so what's the problem?

Ho avuto l'opportunità di visitare (molto in fretta) il Giappone recentemente, e sono tornato con alcune impresisoni piuttosto strane. Per dirne una, sembra che le attività più banali diventino richiose, laggiù. Davvero non sono riuscito a capire quale potesse mai essere il pericolo nello spingere in giro un carrello da aeroporto perfettamente normale, ma in fondo, lo sto "usando a mio rischio e pericolo", quindi, qual'è il problema?

Slacker - Fannullone



Sorry but I just can't resist the avalanche (four, coun'em, FOUR, including a spambot) of comments, and had to reply publicly. Yes, I have been a slacker recently. Of course, this applies only to the voLabulary, not to my life as a whole. In fact, I have been working quite a lot in the past few months, which is the main cause for the absolutely chronical delay in posts. I will be trying to post something in the future, but given the 5-month crunch time I have been going through, I cannot promise anything. On the other hand, well, heck! I have an hard disk full of nifty pictures, I suppose I must share them with someone, no?

Scusate, ma semplicemente non potevo resistere alla valanga (quattro, contateli, QUATTRO, includendo uno spambot) di commenti, e ho dovuto rispondere pubblicamente. Si, sono stato un fannullone, recentemente. Naturalmente questo si applica solo al voLabolario, e non alla mia vita in generale. Infatti, ho lavorato un bel po' nei mesi passati, il che è poi la causa principale del ritardo assolutamente cronico nei miei post. Cercherò di mettere su qualcosa nel futro, ma dato il periodo di superlavoro di circa cinque mesi che sto attraversando, non posso promettere nulla. D'altra parte, cavoli! Ho un hard disk pieno di foto goduriose, suppongo che dovrei condividerle con qualcuno, no?
